Fanciful cooking timer

Another method of measuring the cooking level of any food is managing the time of cooking. In any kitchen we can find a timer like this one, maybe just with other fanciful shapes!

A thermometer for meat

The first way of measuring the cooking level of food is to measure the temperature of the food. A common thermometer could be suitable. This particular thermometer shows the different temperature to get cooked each kind of meat (calf, beef, lamb, pork, chicken...).

Here you can find also a realistic scale of measuring the cooking level of common calf meat, depending on the variation of temperature.

"Killing me softly" and the egg is done

Cooking eggs perfectly had always been a big problem for any chef. This technological egg menages the time of cooking while the eggs are boiling. You just have to put it into the pot with all the other real eggs and let them boil. BeepEgg is playing some melodies indicating the cooking level: from “Killing me softly” for “à la coque” eggs, to “I wish i was a hen” for totally firm eggs...

Runny/squidgy/firm: no more mistakes with soft-boiled eggs!

Everybody knows that the range of time required to prepare soft-boiled eggs dipends on the egg size and temperature. Eggwatcher is a special site that helps you to boil your egg exactly as you desire it! Visit this site and enjoy your next soft-boiled eggs!!

Raw power

Raw power is a hardcore punk band fomed in 1981 to Poviglio, in a small town in the low Reggiana.
The component of this group are Mauro e Giuseppe Codeluppi, but over the years have been many others to join, even if they were the last two remaining in the band until 2002.

FYC - The Raw & the Cooked

With The Raw & the Cooked, the Fine Young Cannibals broke into the mainstream with their particular soul-injected sound. They were seemingly infatuated with late-'50s and early-'60s Motown, and the musical influences on this album range from boogie ("Good Thing," on which Squeeze keyboardist Jools Holland goes to town with a foot-stompin' piano solo) to poodle-skirted slow dance ("As Hard As It Is," "Tell Me What"), then stretch as far as Prince-like funk ("Don't Let It Get You Down"). Possessing one of the most unusual voices in all of pop music, lead singer Roland Gift gives this album its distinction and the Fine Young Cannibals their identity. About half the songs (including the hit "She Drives Me Crazy") are graced with Gift's steady, crystal-clear falsetto, but it's his swollen-throated lower register, where he sounds like he is singing through a trumpeter's plunger mute, that really makes his voice unmistakable.

Si fa presto a dire cotto, un antropologo in cucina

Why do Italians eat pasta "al dente"? Is "tempura" really a japanese invention? Why did pizza conquer the world? And why did the sushi conquer us? These are just few themes on which is this book about.

Uncooked

book's cover
We’re not sure how to feel about this book. We want to love it. It’s beautiful and gorgeously photographed by Grant Symon. It isn’t a book for everybody, nor does it have to be. It seems intended for an elitist club of which we’re not members.
Aesthetes we are, however, and Uncooked appeals to our artistic sensibilities. Many recipes are surprisingly easy to execute and the food photography is stunning. We suggest you to have a look of this book also just for a graphic interest in pictures and food!

The Raw and the Cooked

the original cover, the english edition's one and the picture of the writer

The Raw and the Cooked is one of the seminal works of structuralist anthropology, and probably the best known of all of Lévi-Strauss' works. It begins by looking at one Bororo myth and ends up examining a whole collection of myths from tropical South America. It is not the analysis of the myths themselves that is important, however, but rather the methodology of the analysis, where Lévi-Strauss sets out the basic principles of a structural approach to mythology.

Cooked with fire; it’s the opposite of raw

Prometheus myth: the man who stole god’s fire

Prometheus myth recalls the transition to a humanized civilization made possible by the discovery of fire.

This discovery made possible cooking food, heat from the cold, and defense against animal. Cooking food, and especially meat, has changed the man from a physical point of view: the jaw becomes smaller to make space for the skull. Fire is important because it allowed us to distinguish man from animals.

吐儿冢 ——《封神演义》(fēngshén yǎnyì)

Fengshen Yanyi

King WEN / Ji Chang (周文王/ 姬昌) – a saint, the first King of Zhou Dynasty who wrote a famous book - I Ching.
Bo Yi Kao (伯邑考) - the eldest son of Ji Chang
King ZHOU (商纣王) - the last king of Shang Dynasty who was very cruel.

King ZHOU put Ji Chang in jail. Bo Yi Kao was worried about his father, so he went to Yindu (The capital of Shang Dynasty) to beg King ZHOU to release Ji Chang. But King ZHOU caught him as a hostage. At the same time, King ZHOU got the news that Ji Chang had already finished the book I Ching, which could divine the future. King ZHOU had a cruel idea to test Ji Chang’s ability. He killed Bo Yi Kao, cooked his meat to make a soul and gave it to Ji Chang. Seeing the soup, Ji Chang divined the fact and knew this was a test. If he refused, King ZHOU would suspect him. So he ate the soup. After hearing the report, King ZHOU said smugly, ”Who said Ji Chang was a saint? He had even no idea to eat his son’s meat!” From then on, King ZHOU lowered guard to Ji Chang.
In fact, Ji Chang didn’t digest the meat. He threw them up and formed a grave named “吐儿冢”. It’s also said that the stuff thrown out by JiChang became rabbits, so there is a saying floating aroud Youli (a city’s name) "the rabbits in Youli never can be hunt."

Measurement

The first way of measuring the cooking level of food is to measure the temperature of the food. A common thermometer could be suitable. This particular thermometer shows the different temperature to get cooked each kind of meat (calf, beef, lamb, pork, chicken...).

Somebody also created a "cooked-raw scale" showing the color of meat related, of course again, with temperature. Actually, the color of food is another very important indicator to know the cooking level.

Usually, people pay a particular attention in cooking eggs. We want them well done, not totally cooked, with the yolk well row and still intact... For these reasons, some designers invented a particular instrument to check the cooking level of boiled eggs: we just have to boil this artificial egg in the same pot with the other eggs. When

Bible citation

From the Bible, Exodus 12, 8-10

[8] And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it.
[9] Eat not of it raw, nor sodden at all with water, but roast with fire; his head with his legs, and with the purtenance thereof.
[10] And ye shall let nothing of it remain until the morning; and that which remaineth of it until the morning ye shall burn with fire.
(English version)

(Italian version)

These verses from the Bible refer to the celebration of Easter in the Israel kingdom. Jewish Easter had been instituted in Egypt to commemorate the freeing of israelites. For Israel that meant a new beginning since, after more than 430 years of servitude under the egyptian domanion, israelites could finally follow their own path that God set for them.
The festivity used to begin on the 14th of the Nisan month (March-April) and continued for seven days. On the tenth day of the month, they had to choose one white coat lamb from the whole flock. On the fouteenth day, they should sacrifice that lamb, eat it, and spread the lamb’s blood on the lintel and the two jambs of each door of all their houses.
That’s the marker of their salvation as, in that night, God would pass through Egypt to inflict the ten plagues to the country, just sparing their houses.
